Subcommitte Reports |
|
|
a.Career/Technical Education
Chris Laverty and Ralph Hansen reported CTE has been reviewing a common recruitment process, similar to the one used by LAMP and STRA. This would be implemented by Clinton and Eaton Counties. Their next major goal will be to identify geographic barriers. They provided data on CTE programs available in the area, and will be comparing available seating with enrollment. About 25% of students are accessing CTE programs.
b.Marketing
Patricia Cook gave the Marketing report. The Career Connections Awards Ceremony will be April 30th at 5:30. Make sure its on your calendar. Hoping all Career Connections board members can attend. Invitations are on their way to educators. Names of others should be provided to Sandi Carter. Patty thanked the ISD staff and Chris Laverty. Board members will be briefed at the April meeting on their role. The marketing committee would like to have a board member at each table. Hoping for 350-400 to turn up.
c.Regional Implementation Group
Martha Finn invited board members to attend the March 25th evening with Marian Liebowitz. She will also be spending two days with teaching staff. Teachers will be visiting employers and constructing lessons. Also, a one-day training is scheduled for K-12 staff with Steven Barkley on April 18.
Edith encouraged board members to attend the March 25th Evening with Marian Liebowitz.
Program Evaluation
The evaluation team is reviewing the Lighthouse Districts self-assessments to look at their progress with implementation. A report will be made at the April meeting.

d.English-as-a-Second Language
Lauretta at LCC has put together a directory of providers and services. This directory is for business people to understand what resources are available in the community. CAMW will handle printing and distribution of the directory.
Patricia Cook and Chris Laverty visited three different PAL locations. They were impressed with Peckhams ESL program. They also visited Cristo Rey and the CAMW Service Center. A visit to LCC is planned.
Patty encouraged other board members to make field visits. They are rewarding and informative for board members and provide an opportunity for the Workforce Development Board and Career Connections Board to view their impact on the community. Cordell Henderson invited other members to visit Lansings ESL program at Hill, with 40 different languages represented.
Continuation of PAL funding is a concern. Doug urged members to contact their representative about funding for this program.
A motion was made to send a letter from Career Connections to lawmakers. The motion carried and board members voted to send a letter.
Edith observed the subcommittee reports reflect how far this board has come and commended everyone for their role and efforts.

Planning Process for 2002-2003 |
|
|
Bob Thelen reported three different proposals will be submitted to the Michigan Department of Career Development in May. More details will be provided at the April meeting. Ralph Hansen reviewed the tech prep funding and the Perkins legislation, and Bob explained the career prep legislation, providing a chart describing how the money is distributed. Pathways funding will be available for schools that are not already on board. There will be $30,000 available per school for up to 10 schools. The Executive Committee will be making a recommendation on the three proposals at the April meeting. There will be less focus on events and more focus on local implementation of the Pathways process. Will probably continue with the newsletter and considering student planners for all 8th graders. Will also be looking at funding for the employer/student web site. All activities will be tied to the four goals. |

Also, there was a good turnout for the Langford training in March.

Chris reported theres a meeting scheduled for April 16th with all companies involved in the Manufacturing Career Academy (the curriculum grant). A regional consortium has been reviewing the curriculum and the meeting will be a review with all companies involved.
Chris also provided members with a summary of Career Connections meeting attendance for the last year. Mayor Hollister provided information on the HOPE scholarship program. Through a partnership with Lansing School District, Lansing Police Department, Lansing Community College and Michigan State University, 500 scholarships were made available to at-risk 6th graders. 600 attended an orientation about the scholarships. The partners have raised $300,000 to date, and their goal is to raise $2.3 million. He asked for leads on funding support.
