Lansing Mayor Tony Benavides was recently appointed to the Career Connections board.
ITEM #2 Public Comments
None.
ITEM #3 Approval of Minutes
Minutes of the January board meeting were approved as written.
ITEM #4 Accountability and Evaluation Iniatives
Kathy Tomlanovich and Karen Reiff presented on the accountability initiatives. Their focus was on Education YES (Yardstick for Excellent Schools) and its crosswalk to Career Prep accountability, but they also touched on No Child Left Behind. The crosswalk they presented compares the 9 career prep benchmarks with the Education YES 11 indicators. The No Child Left Behind PowerPoint is available on Ingham Intermediate’s web site. ITEM #5 Subcommittee Reports
a.Career/Technical Education
The focus continues to be on STRA. Tom Griffin reported on the meeting with Saginaw ISD. They are still hoping to visit Kent and Macomb.

b.Evaluation
Report given by Karl Stearns. Their focus is on how to bring together all the data on career prep so that we don’t duplicate.

c.Marketing
70 days to the awards ceremony. Paula Cunningham will MC. Stage directions are being developed. An outline will be shard with the board at the April meeting. The third newsletter is due to be mailed next week. Key union leadership people in schools will be added to the invitation list.

d.Regional Implementation Group
Goals and recommendations for next year were provided and reviewed by Martha Finn. They include support for local districts, regional professional development, accountability and local implementation.

e.Chairperson’s Report
Doug gave an update on the web site development. Blue Pencil received the bid to put up the home page. It will look like it is at the chamber, but will be the Career Connections web site. Development will take place in three phases.

The executive committee will be putting together a review team to visit schools before the Lighthouse application process.

An accountability team made up of Career Connections board members will be assembled whose purpose will be to visit current Lighthouse districts.

ITEM #7 Other Business
  • LAMP is currently conducting the application process and is using Work Keys to assess prospective students.
  • Langford training will be held at Ingham Intermediate June 17-20. The cost is $300.00 per person. LCC has also scheduled Langford training for May.
  • The membership accounting committee for the Workforce Development Board and the Career Connections board is currently reviewing attendance on both boards.
  • Jon Tomlanovich has an article featuring data on the success and impact of school-to-work programs. He will be forwarding the article to Sandi Carter, who will include it in the next board meeting packet.
  • Doug Stites reported on Mayor Hollister’s comments during his Senate hearing, and they were very supportive of the work of this board.
